Kamryn Pitcher

You were silent when the dogs started barking
The sound echoed through the snowy white streets
And after a while, I couldn’t tell if they were the ones screaming
Or me

It all started when I remembered that night in your car
You placed your head in my lap
And I rubbed my hand on the space between your shoulder and neck

Your father’s voice was earnest through the phone
And the stars kept telling me to keep it together
The boy is yours for the moment
Don’t ruin it

But now I am hidden
I found my crack in the wall like I said I would
I stay still so I don’t have to believe I ever left

If I never see the sunrise or the sunset
In a land where you do not exist
Then perhaps I am not really there

Yet, I see, I am there
Where the dogs bark and the wall splits
Where the snow hits gravel instead of pavement
