I Just Want

Nichole Davies

to breathe again.

To sit in the silence and hear your presence.

To know without a doubt that you are within arm’s reach.

To rest in the quiet and hear your heart steady,

my once-strong but now fluttering smile .

There is a great sea miles wide between our bodies, landlocked.

And I sit here reaching for a soul closer than my own,

cannon-like silence dripping with discontent.
